Two buildings for historic archives of Chiayi City were religious fast house and social affair house affiliated to Chiayi Shrine in the Japanese colony. The Historic Archives Building of Chiayi City has been listed as historic site. Fast house was a place of fast and preparation before sacrifices and social affairs house is an office for shrine administration management.
The two buildings were kind of Japanese academy style, which used building elements such as ceiling, paper doors with horizontal pull, and veranda. The Japanese roof is somewhat like traditional Chinese one. Eaves, ridges, and spines are Japanese style. The top of exterior walls is the system of wood brackets on the top of a column supporting the crossbeam, and the lower part is real wall style. The platform is installed with low fences, and the doors are pulled horizontally; windows are pulled horizontally with fixed grille, fixed grille and horizontal pull windows, and paper horizontal pull windows. Religious East house and social affair house, and sacrifice wares storehouse are representative of residential culture left behind by Japanese. The exterior walls of sacrifice wares storehouse were molded with concrete cement to be shaped like wooden material, which is quite special.
The religious fast house was built in an area of 267 square meters and social affair house was built in an area of 208 square meters. Between two buildings were connected with a traverse. The City Government assigned the professional reconstruction agencies to work the project based on the principle of do not change the main structure"," reserve the original appearance, shape and style"," restore according to the original building element " and" consider the matches of the park environment"...etc. The restoration and repair of the building has been completed one after another.
In October, 1998, the two buildings was checked and ratified by the Chiayi Government as destined historic site for the city, and entitle Chiayi City historic archives building On September 15, 2001, the Chiayi City Historic Archives Building opened for public, displaying people and things of Chiayi, Interlacing respective elegance of the past time and modern time to stir up people's feeling of loving hometown and home. The historic archives building are the best place to understand the history of Chiayi. To Know Chiayi, one may start visiting historic archives building.
